ARTIST STATEMENT

Ágnes Molnár focuses on societal themes in her work, with a particular interest in consumption, individualization, inequality, and perception. She creates contrasts in her paintings to emphasize social realities, building a bridge between the duality of our existence—the abstract world of social phenomena and our everyday reality. By everyday reality, she refers to the dimension of what we see, do, and the outcomes of our decisions. The abstract world of social phenomena, on the other hand, encompasses the underlying dimensions of daily life, such as cultural values, prejudices, individualization, and consumer behavior, which shape and govern our everyday existence.

Ágnes Molnár's motivation to explore societal themes stems from her personal background of migration and her experience navigating different social strata. Over the 20 years from her integration course to completing a double master’s degree, she encountered a variety of social situations. Her observations during this time led her to ask “Why,” which ultimately inspired her to study sociology to better understand her environment and her own life story.

In her painting, Ágnes Molnár is drawn to figurative and abstract art. She is particularly fascinated by colors, light, and shadow, which she uses to intensify or visually depict thematic contrasts. Her artistic inspirations include classical painters such as Jan Vermeer and Caspar David Friedrich.

She executes her paintings using acrylic or oil paints on canvas, typically in medium-sized formats.
